Can info under college notice acceptable for wiki citation?

File:HITK Clubs.pdf
Heritage Institute of Technology Clubs lists

Hello, I recently uploaded PDF file (HITK clubs.pdf) for the citation of my college clubs list in the Heritage Institute of technology, Kolkata article. So, the PDF I uploaded can it be used as a citation for the same? HridoyKundu (talk) 18:38, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is question that you should ask at the respective Wikipedia. Commons does not enforce any citation policy. Ruslik (talk) 20:29, 19 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@HridoyKundu: You don't need to upload images of sources you want to cite in a English Wikipedia article. English Wikipedia doesn't require sources cited in article be available online; it only requires that they be en:Wikipedia:Reliable sources (as defined by English Wikipedia). Moreover, such images like the PDF file you uploaded may be eligible for copyright protection regardless of whether they are considered reliable sources and uploading them to Commons could be considered a copyright violation. Why do you think the file you uploaded is OK to be license as {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}? You don't seem to have created the list yourself (you've attributed it to "Basab Chaudhuri (Principal of Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata)") and receiving a copy of the list via email doesn't mean it's not eligible for copyright protection and doesn't make you its copyright holder. Did you just choose a random license when you uploaded this file? Does it clearly state somewhere in the email your received or in the PDF itself that the list is released under a "cc-by-sa-2.5" license? Perhaps the file is OK for Commons, and only needs to be relicensed; it's hard, though, to determine that without knowing more information about the email you received. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:35, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
So should I delete this? HridoyKundu (talk) 09:42, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
HridoyKundu, if the file is released under a free license, it can be kept. If the license is not free or if the copyright status of the file is unknown, it cannot be hosted here. Please note that Commons:License laundering is not permitted on Commons and may lead to a block. Ratekreel (talk) 11:24, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Uploading a YouTube video with wrong license but with permission from the uploader

edit

A mate of mine recorded a video of him pointing to other people dressed as Spider-Man (like the meme) this video. I wanna upload like 20 seconds of it but he uploaded it with the YouTube license, so I asked him if it was fine and he said it was. I asked him to put proof on his user page and told him people would be able to do anything with it and he was fine with it but he didn't read commons license 4 I sent him. He also said I could upload this photo but your just gonna haft to believe me because he didn't say it on his user page. is "your just gonna haft to believe me" not good enough to upload something? and can I upload the video? Anthony2106 (talk) 13:43, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'm afraid "your just gonna haft to believe me" is not good enough - when uploading copyrighted or copyrightable works that you did not create yourself, Commons needs proof that the original author/copyright holder explicitly agrees to free license the work. That can be done various ways including via email; see COM:VRT for details. Cheers and thanks for asking, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:40, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
is this proof enough for me to upload a video of his? Anthony2106 (talk) 14:41, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Anthony2106: No, there is no license specified. Can you have him contact VRT directly?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:45, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
after emailing VRT would they have him verify its him via him adding something to his YouTube talkpage? (or whatever yt calls it). idk if he knows how to email people his not good with technology, I could run it by him later it's really late, thanks Anthony2106 (talk) 14:59, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Anthony2106: Yes. Late in what timezone?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:20, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Anthony2106: I just want to make clear that the problem there isn't where he stated the permission, but the fact that he doesn't specify a license. Commons' requirement isn't for him to say who can upload, it's for him to say what license is granted. Once the correct license is granted, anyone can upload. So if it is more convenient than email to VRT, he can use a public-facing post from the YouTube account; it's just that the post needs to grant a specific free license. - Jmabel ! talk 06:21, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel I asked him to post a reply saying creative commons 4,[1] is this enough? or does he still need to re-upload it? Anthony2106 (talk) 04:59, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Anthony2106: "Creative Commons 4" means nothing. I can't even make a solid guess what license it is intended to mean. CC-BY 4.0? CC-BY-SA 4.0? Either of those would be acceptable. However, CC-BY-NC 4.0, CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0, CC-BY-ND 4.0, and CC-BY=NC-SA 4.0 are all unacceptable for Commons. And if they don't know the difference, they really should not be offering a license. (And, honestly, if you don't know the difference you probably should make sure you understand this before reaching out and asking people to do something irrevocable.) - Jmabel ! talk 05:08, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK, the link is clear, even if what you wrote here isn't: {{CC-BY 4.0}}. That's fine. - Jmabel ! talk 05:10, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Anthony2106: Right. If he said that in an email message, please forward it to VRT and carbon copy him on the resulting message.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:41, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Image of Children on Commons

edit

File:Children of Punjab.jpg ('File' or 'Image')

This image depicts identifiable children who may not have provided consent for their likeness to be shared publicly. Since minors cannot legally consent in India, and due to potential privacy risks, this image may require review or removal under privacy guidelines.

We have no evidence that these children have knowledge where the picture/image was going to be used. It is still a privacy concern. VeritasVanguard (talk) 16:10, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, We thousands of such pictures on Commons, and {{Personality rights}} for your concerns. Yann (talk) 16:53, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wikimedia Commons is not a social Media see Commons:NOTSOCIAL. All of the images of non notable persons especially children should be deleted.
Who would be at fault, if the file is misused, since We have no evidence that these children have knowledge where the picture/image was going to be used. were they to use their legal rights, wouldn't Wikimedia Commons have some responsibility if such were to happen. VeritasVanguard (talk) 17:22, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Again: personality rights violations can be pursued as such, but U.S. law -- the relevant law for where Wikimedia Commons is hosted -- does not have any general prohibition against posting pictures of minors. - Jmabel ! talk 06:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
"While it is true that there is no blanket prohibition in U.S. law against posting images of minors, particularly on platforms like Wikimedia Commons, this does not exempt the platform from obligations related to privacy, ethical use, and informed consent—especially regarding images of vulnerable populations, such as children under 13.
  1. International Law and Personality Rights of Minors: Given that these children are identifiable and from a non-U.S. jurisdiction (India), it's imperative to consider both international privacy principles and personality rights.According to principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)—to which India is a signatory—children's right to privacy is fundamental, and their images should not be used without explicit, informed consent by a legal guardian.
  2. Lack of Informed Consent and Minor Vulnerability: In the U.S., while adults in public spaces generally have limited privacy protections, minors are treated differently under both common law and statutory frameworks. The Restatement (Second) of Torts, Section 652D supports that even those in public spaces may have claims if their likeness is widely distributed without consent in a manner that violates privacy expectations. Although Wikimedia Commons applies U.S. law, it is ethically and legally precarious to assert that young, non-consenting minors have effectively waived any rights to their images in an international public domain.
  3. Platform Responsibility and Liability Risk: Wikimedia Commons, as a U.S.-based platform, may still bear ethical and practical liability if these images are misused. Even with a Creative Commons license, platforms bear responsibility when the use of images, particularly those involving children, poses foreseeable risks. If these images are repurposed for unintended or harmful use, Wikimedia Commons may face reputational damage, potential legal challenges under evolving privacy laws, or compliance issues with new data protection frameworks like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and similar state laws that recognize the digital privacy rights of minors.
  4. Practical Precedent and Ethical Obligation: Wikimedia Commons has previously set precedents for image removal where identifiable minors are involved without verified consent, especially if they come from jurisdictions where their capacity to consent is legally nullified. The presence of numerous similar images on Commons does not negate the ethical responsibility to protect vulnerable populations and honor privacy requests. Upholding this removal request would align Wikimedia Commons with best practices in international digital ethics, as well as proactive compliance with emerging privacy norms worldwide.
In summary, the retention of identifiable images of minors without clear, verifiable consent poses both ethical and legal challenges for Wikimedia Commons. Removal of such images protects the children involved, honors international privacy principles, and aligns with the platform's stated commitment to responsible content sharing." VeritasVanguard (talk) 10:14, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@VeritasVanguard: firstly, who are you quoting? This reads like ChatGPT/AI to me. To point 1, I trust User:Satdeep Gill has gotten the appropriate permission. To point 2, you quote Restatement of the Law, Second, Torts, § 652, which says "[o]ne who intentionally intrudes, physically or otherwise, upon the solitude or seclusion of another or his private affairs or concerns, is subject to liability to the other for invasion of his privacy". This photo doesn't look like an intrusion into a person's life to me. To point 3, can you quote a specific section of the CCPA? And to point 4, can you quote such a precedent? —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 12:09, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just to provide a little context here. I took this photograph at the same time and place when I was taking pictures of adults like this File:Punjabi turbaned man - 3.jpg while stopping my car during a journey through Punjab. I did share with them that I will be uploading these photographs on the internet and both the adults and minors were simply happy. I did not go further to find out the parents of each one of them and get a written consent from them and frankly that would have made them more suspicious about my intentions. - Satdeep Gill (talk) 14:21, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

PDF book preview does not work

edit

After clearing the cache, the PDF media player shows the book, but when I scroll forward 4-5 times, the media player crashes. Then I have to clear the cache again and the book is shown again when I scroll forward, after 3-4 pages it crashes again. The whole thing repeats itself endlessly.

I consulted this thread but it was not helpful (Commons:Help desk/Archive/2024/10#PDF book preview does not work).

These two files are affected:

Emilian von Źernicki-Szeliga. 1900. Der polnische Adel und die demselben hinzugetretenen andersländischen Adelsfamilien. General-verzeichniss.pdf

Diecezja Częstochowska - Jan Wiśniewski (1936).pdf

Any solutions?

@Angel Miklashevsky: Did you try to view these PDF files locally using a reader per {{PDF}}? The only thumbnail I get for the first file is here. @Jeff G. Hi, I can view these PDF files locally without any problems. I have been using Adobe Acrobate Professional 2020.
I call "PDF media player" the option on WikiCommons to browse through a PDF and view thumbnails without having to download the file first. Angel Miklashevsky (talk) 12:34, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G. I have now checked the second file and now I can scroll down without any problems. It has somehow sorted itself out... But the first file still doesn't work properly. Angel Miklashevsky (talk) 12:37, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Uploading photographs which I personally own

edit

I am experiencing huge and seemingly intractable difficulty in trying to do what seems like it should be really straightforward. Perhaps I am doing something wrong but I cannot find any way around it. _______________________

I am the owner of a lot of old photographs taken for me at my request by friends. They have never been published anywhere before and I now want to upload some of them to wikimedia commons as public domain graphics.

I answered truthfully your questions as hereunder:

(1) This is someone else's work and is free to share. (2) I am then expected to know whether it is published under a free license or if its copyright has expired and what Creative Commons license this work was published under. I answered truthfully again that I don't have this information. As I have said, it has never been published under ANY license. (3) Alternatively, I can say that this work is not protected by copyright law and hence has no associated license. But then I am asked to enter a different license in wikitext format? How can I enter a `different' license it if has NO license at all? (4) I am then asked where I `found' the work. I again truthfully reply that the two photographs I am trying to upload are among several taken for me at my request by a personal friend (Mr Ronald Jones, sadly long deceased). It was clearly understood that from the beginning I owned the photographs (they were taken on MY camera) and could use them for any appropriate purpose, that I have subsequently edited both to crop and add names etc. and that I wish them to become public domain images. I also confirmed that the work does not include material restricted by copyright, such as logos, posters, cover art, etc.

At the end of all this I am repeatedly told that there is one error with the form above and that I must correct the error and try submitting again.

I have tried everything I can to no avail and desperately need help - please!!! Mikipede (talk) 13:20, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mikipede: If you did not take the pictures, we require permission from the person who did (strictly: from the copyright owner). Please follow the process at COM:VRT/CONSENT. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:43, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
And if they are older, it might be matter of the photographer's heirs, not the photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 16:57, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
After re-reading: unless you are very old (like, considerably older than me, and I'm about to turn 70) it is a near-certainty that any previously unpublished picture taken in your lifetime remains copyrighted. (There are a few countries where that isn't entirely true, and you don't say what country you are in; if you provide that information, someone can say something more definitive.) Barring very unusual circumstances, that copyright would belong to the photographer or (in the case of the late Mr. Jones) the heir to the photographer's intellectual property. If you are in touch with that person, they can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant permission. If not, you probably have no way to get an appropriate license for these photos. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I'm new to Wiki procedures so I hope I'm replying in the correct way. If not, please let me know how to reply to you.
Firstly, many thanks for your reply. In answer to your questions, I'm in the UK and am coming up 81 years old in a few week's time.
It's hard to know where to start. Seeking permission from the guy who took the photos for me is impossible – Ron Jones and his wife both passed away a long time ago and I don't think they had a family.
But for me, the central point is that the understanding between us was always that the photos would be my intellectual property/copyright from day one, to be used as publicity material or in any other appropriate way. I simply asked an old friend to hold my camera and press the shutter button. It would not have occurred to me (or any other young person) that I needed my friend to put in writing whose photos they were – surely nobody ever does that? One of the photos is more than 53 years old and the other 46! It seems unbelievable to be told that I need permission to put my own old photographs into the public domain.
I'm very grateful to you for your advice. Where do I go from here?

You might take this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright for more expert opinion, but I believe that in the UK there is no way to orally transfer copyright. If you don't know who the photographer's heir was, you are probably stuck in the infamous "orphaned work" situation: there is a copyright, but you don't have any way to work out who owns it, so you have no way to get permission. - Jmabel ! talk 20:25, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

SVG display

edit

I recently uploaded an SVG file here. I checked it with https://validator.w3.org/ and it says the file is okay, but the image is not displaying correctly. When I visit the image page as linked, the five black half-characters on the yellow field display as half-asterisks, stars, etc. However, when I click the image to see the file directly, it displays just fine. What's going on here and how can it be fixed? Matt Deres (talk) 23:16, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

First off, thanks for your contribution. Secondly, when I view the image directly, it is still malformed, just in a different way. :/ Third, while almost all SVGs seem to render correctly, sometimes they seem to not and sometimes that only is a problem with thumbnails and not when viewed directly or embedded into a page for some weird reason. Unfortunately, I personally am not smart enough to figure out what's going on and there may be nothing we can do here, so it may be necessary to file a bug at phab:. I give this semi-answer just in case no one else actually solves the problem in a timely fashion and you can at least have a next step to follow and aren't left hanging. Sorry that that is only somewhat helpful. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:27, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, the CSS edit I just made removes the dingbats from the file, at least. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:30, 3 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes - thank you - though now the letters do not line up correctly. In case it's not clear, this is the file I was working recreate in SVG. Matt Deres (talk) 03:14, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I guess I'll do that. I've contributed to Wikipedia for almost twenty years so this shouldn't surprise me, but it does: we still really do make it difficult for people to help. I'm still just starting out on vector drawing, so it took an hour or so to make the image, but I've spent more than that navigating the conflicting demands and peculiarities of adding an image to Wikimedia. Your kind assistance is the stuff that makes it worthwhile. Thank you. Matt Deres (talk) 03:23, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Matt Deres I haven't looked at the source code for your svg but does it use fonts at all? If made with inkscape Help:Inkscape#Text font problems may be relevant, it leads to Help:SVG#Fonts. Sorry if I am off base with this suggestion. Commander Keane (talk) 04:01, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are fonts - well, a font: Impact. Oddly enough, both halves of the text were done identically, so there's no particular reason why half would work and half would not work. Matt Deres (talk) 15:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Matt Deres, I don't see Impact in the supported list, called "raw list" at Help:SVG#Fonts. Given the text is unlikely to change or need translation you could convert text to paths in your svg editor and see if that fixes it. About 16 years ago I had that issue with Mediawiki renderer. Commander Keane (talk) 21:17, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the pointer. I thought the remnants of the font were wiped out when I chopped the letters up to do the colour break, but maybe not. I will double check. My skill level is still pretty low, so I have a tendency to blow stuff up when I try fixing them, but who knows? :-) Matt Deres (talk) 21:22, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Justin (koavf), @Commander Keane - I've edited the file. There were indeed letter characters still in the file. I've converted them to paths so the problem should be resolved, but the file still looks weird. The dingbats are gone, but the file still looks like the one Justin (koavf) edited, where the letters do not line up correctly. When I view the file's page, the bottom half of the lettering still looks fine, but the top half is a thinner font. If I click the image itself to view the bare file, it appears correctly. Is this still a problem with the SVG or is this an issue with versions of the file perhaps not updating correctly? Matt Deres (talk) 03:08, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

This is a caching thing on your end: it renders correctly as a thumbnail and the direct file for me. Great work, Matt. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 03:17, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Matt Deres, looks good to me also. Help:Purge could fix it for you or a hard refresh in your browser, typically Ctrl + F5. Commander Keane (talk) 03:22, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
That did it - thank you both. Matt Deres (talk) 03:41, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Uploading my old photos

edit

Many years ago, a friend took some pics of me with my band because obviously we couldn't take them ourselves! I gave him my camera and he took the photos which were for use in publicity, posters, articles, etc. Now, after more than 50 years, I have tried to upload a couple to Wiki Commons as public domain but am told I need to get his permission. Firstly he and his wife died a long time ago so that's not possible but more to the point, I had his permission from the start. He agreed to take the pics for me to use. Nobody asks their friends to put their permission in writing! This is crazy surely - their must be a countless number of photos on Wiki taken by friends in exactly this way and none of them will have anything in writing. Please advise. Mikipede (talk) 12:27, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Your friend probably has heirs. They can jointly issue a licence and send it to the Permissions Team. If there are no heirs, the state is the heir. In principle, the state as the heir could grant permission. However, I am not aware of such a case. The only thing to do then is to wait until the images become public domain. In many jurisdictions, this is the case 70 years after death, but the period can also be shorter or longer.
If you know that there are one or more images here for which there is no authorisation from the author and which are not in the public domain, you can submit a deletion request. The images will then be deleted and restored 70 years after the author's death. If the date of death is unknown, then 100 years after publication.
For future cases, it is advisable to ask the author of a work to publish it here during his or her lifetime or to clarify in a will what should happen to it after his or her death. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:45, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Airai Bai photos

edit

Hello, I'd like to upload a photo of the Airai Bai, located in Palau, onto Wikimedia Commons. The structure was built in 1890, which I believe should make it public domain according to this page, but the structure was renovated around 1974-1976 to restore it to the original look. Does that renew the copyright on the structure? Palau also does not have freedom of panorama, but I believe if the 1890 date takes precedence over the 1970s dates, then it shouldn't matter since the building would be in the public domain anyway. Thanks so much! ananari (talk) 21:26, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Restoration intended to replicate the original should not acquire any new copyrights. If you took the photo yourself, then this should be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wikitext for subtitles of video using VTT?

edit

Is it possible to show a video in Wikipedia with subtitles from a w:WebVTT file? What would be the wikitext?

This would allow:

  • a video in Afrikaans to be subtitled in Afrikaans
  • and in German with a different VTT file
  • and in English with a different VTT file
  • and in... whatever language.

That would allow one and the same video to be used on the English and the Afrikaans Wikipedia, tailored to the local language. Uwappa (talk) 07:27, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Uwappa, does Commons:Timed Text help? Commander Keane (talk) 08:17, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

It would allow
  • English subtitles for fellow Wikipedians for a video of a usability test of BRI calculator done by people talking Afrikaans
  • The Afrikaans speaking people in the video will be fine with the English user interface of the calculator
  • But the fellow Wikipedians will struggle with the Afrikaans if no subtitles
  • All will struggle with the "中国房间 = AI NOT(AI)?" joke at w:Template talk:Body roundness index#AI or not AI?, which will be explained in the help info of the calculator, when the AI or not AI section moves from the sandbox talkpage to the BRI calculator.

My questions to you, in English, so the use of the Chinese Room called "Google Translate" is not needed
  1. Please read w:Template talk:Body roundness index#Usability test of body roundness calculators
  2. Please check your own health using the BRI calculator, sandbox version, work in progress: w:Template:Body roundness index/sandbox#calculator-field-height
  3. Share the results, preferably with a (subtitled) video of the screen and your voiced thoughts. Important for me: Succes/failure? Total time spent. What problems in the design did you encounter?
  4. Please read work in progress, documentation in plain English for IP visitors, not Wikipedians
  5. Please read work in progress at w:Template talk:Body roundness index#Information hierarchy
  6. Test that explanation with a Chinese educated local, with limited English skills. Is that plain English understandable for non-English speakers?
  7. Do you know how to create a formula using w:Template:Math. That template gives me a headache.
  8. Can you create a Math formula for: "中国房间 = AI NOT(AI)?"
  9. Would you like to |replace the current "中国房间 = AI NOT(AI)?" by a Math formula?
  10. If not, fine, no worries. Can you pass the questions to a local Wikipedian who understands Chinese, English and knows how to use Template Math? Preferably to someone who appreciates the joke.

I cannot delete the creation date from jpg.

edit

I want to make photos and videos available on Commons but only without the creation date that seems to be added by the camera. On a folder full of jpg I have used a tool to delete all exif data. But in Windows10, for example, after right-clicking on Properties under both the "Allgemein->Geändert" and "Details->Änderungsdatum" tabs, the creation date is still listed. Although the description of the deletion tool states that everything treacherous is deleted, this feature has obviously been forgotten. This entry cannot be removed under Windows either. Which tool can I use to remove all references to the creation date from all jpg files in a folder, even from the Windows tabs described above? The same applies to all mp4 videos. -- 31.150.214.60 11:20, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

The "creation date" for files viewed in Windows should not get transferred upon upload, as that is a local property. However, you will still need to login to upload.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:17, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Spiderpig662: Indeed. Also, if this photo of a young woman is actually from circa 1937, then that is consistent with the life dates of Jaleh Esfahani (1921-2007), and not consistent with the life dates of Jaleh Ghaem-Maghami (1883-1947). Per what I see at Marcel Dantheny, allezredstar.com and Commons:Copyright rules by territory/France#General you can not upload those black and white pics of Marcel Dantheny to Commons at this time (unless you have permission from the copyright holder), but if they count as "Anonymous works: 70 years after publication (if author never disclosed)" (which I'm not sure of, I only see what's on that webpage), that time is not that far off. Allowed licenses on pictures

edit

Are headshots fair use? I need to replace someone's picture, I believe his headshots are protected by licenses, but which ones are okay for Wikipedia use if a photographer allows me to use it? Also, by "allows me" does that just mean he gives me verbal/written permission? Or do I need something more serious. Can an uploaded picture still credit the photographer or is uploading it to Wikipedia letting it go into the ether...? Nslms24 (talk) 17:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Nslms24 Commons accepts no "fair use", and en-WP does not for living people. The picture has to be shown to be published with a license acceptable on Commons, see Commons:Licensing#Well-known licenses. If you are in contact with the photographer, you can point them to Wikipedia:A picture of you on how to "donate" a picture. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:27, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I suggest a thumbnail image that represents the identity and culture of the Komti community. Ideally, this would be an image of a symbol, event, or individual that members widely recognize and identify with today.
Komtis are a community historically associated with both Telugu and Odia languages, with Telugu being more commonly spoken today. Including a note at the beginning about the languages spoken by this community would clarify the objective more effectively. Chittaranjan.patro69 (talk) 06:45, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Permission via twitter

edit

Hello.

I am writing an article about a cafe and asked on Twitter if anyone had a photo available for the article, and the cafe owner's account uploaded photos to Twitter as available photos.

I am not certain of my understanding of the license and would like to be sure.

I remember that in such a case, the photo can be used if I ask the owner to state the license in the form of a direct link to the photo, such as "I release the above photo under CC BY-SA 4.0 license".

Is my understanding correct? 狄の用務員 (talk) 09:06, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I don't think a permission on Twitter is OK. The permission should be sent by the copyright holder to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Yann (talk) 09:08, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for clarification. 狄の用務員 (talk) 11:23, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I disagree with Yann here. If it's a public-facing tweet, that should be fine. The only possible problem is if it is not entirely clear that the cafe owner owns the copyright to the photos, in which case you would want them to assert that as well. But stating it this way should have exactly as much standing as stating the same thing to the VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 20:11, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you all for the advice. Here I consider Wikipedia:Help Project's guidelines, Wikipedia:A_picture_of_you, formed by consensus of users, to be the most correct and reliable.
There was no problem with my initial understanding. In other words, get a license notation from the rights holder in the same thread as the tweet that was published. This is the same way as the guidelines, and should be fine.thank you very much. 狄の用務員 (talk) 08:48, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category:Poisons needs a bit of help

edit

Hi, I came across this category which needs a bit of sorting out, but I don't know enough about it so hoping this will help. Specifically: toxin vs poison - and substances under each category. Also: naming of Category:Poisoning (murder) isn't the best seeing that Category:Poisoning doesn't exist. Someone created Category:Criminal poisoning which makes sense to me but I redirected for the moment as it had 1 file in it. Perhaps that would be better as it can include poisoning of animals? And what about accidental poisoning such as lead poisoning? Anyway, hoping there's someone out there that has a vision for this category :). YouTube video screenshot?

edit

Hi, I'm looking to update the photo of Oliver Stark as the photo is 13 years old and not very accurate of his looks today. I have 2 options but I am unsure if they can be used. 1 is from the Zach Sang Show on YouTube (however the logo of the show is visible on the microphone) and the other is from a Family Feud clip uploaded by the official channel. Are either of these acceptable to use? Sorry if this isn't the right place to put this — I've never had to use this site before :) Olivergrandeee (talk) 10:02, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Olivergrandeee, if the YouTube video of Zach Sang Show is licensed under Creative Commons and the logo on the microphone is minor and not significant, it may be uploaded to Commons. If the other photo from Family Feud channel is also from YouTube, it also needs to be licensed under Creative Commons to be uploaded here. If it's not from YT, it needs to be licensed under an acceptable license before being uploded to Commons. Only videos with a clear CC BY license on YouTube qualify. Standard YouTube licenses don't allow reuse and hence are not allowed on Commons. Ratekreel (talk) 11:02, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Permission, via Flickr?

Hi all. I found this image and asked the uploader if it'd be okay if the image were uploaded to Commons for use in the subject's BLP article. In response, they are allowing upload (with credit). How would one go about doing this in uploading? Livelikemusic (talk) 16:21, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

The author should change the license at Flickr (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA). Yann (talk) 16:35, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Livelikemusic, alternatively, the author may send the permission to COM:VRT to upload this file here on Commons. The above permission (which you've linked) is insufficient as it's not clear which license will be added to the file once uploaded. Ratekreel (talk) 16:39, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Livelikemusic: Please do not ask for permission "for use on [a specific] Wikipedia page". Commons is for images that are licensed such that anyone may reuse them, even commercially. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:31, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

How To Create Your Own Page About Yourself Without Getting Banned

@Paulewen66: Hi, You can't. Wikimedia projects are not social media, so do not promote yourself here. Yann (talk) 18:18, 6 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Pages are only created if the subject is notable. If a lot of news sources and journalists begin talking about you, only then can you warrant a page on Wikipedia. Famous does not always equal notable. For example, my favorite show BFDI, is popular, but it does not get its page since it does not have news sources talking about it and the only ones that exist only reference it in a minor way, or are AI generated. Photo for article

Hello,

While going through some old slides I found a really nice image of the USS Clairborne out of Mobile, Alabama from April of 1959. It was taken by my grandmother who has long passed but I thought it'd be a nice addition to your article on the ship. Have spent almost an hour trying to figure out how to add it, but to no avail. If you want it, please help me post it. Thanks. Chetmars (talk) 21:37, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Chetmars: If (as it sounds) the image has never been published and if you are the heir to your grandmother's intellectual property, then you can upload it, accurately attributing your grandmother as the author and using a license template such as {{Cc-by-4.0-heirs}}. When you do that, you are granting an irrevocable license, so make sure you understand the license before you upload.
If someone else is the heir to here intellectual property, then it's trickier; let us know if we have to lay out that trickier case for you. - Jmabel ! talk 01:42, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

logo question

edit

if an organization gives me permission on email to 'use' their log to upload it to their wiki page may I do that? Vondercrump (talk) 05:20, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Vondercrump: There are so many separate issues wrapped up in that question that I would suggest that you should be very wary of uploading third-party images to this site (or other WMF sites) until you have a better idea of what those issues are. Let me try to help you out.
  1. You say "their wiki page". I'm guessing you mean a page in the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), but since there are several hundred Wikipedias in various languages (plus Wikimedia Commons, the project on which you are asking this question), each with their own policies, the answers may be different if you mean something else.
  2. Commons, this site, accepts content (including logos) only if it is either in the public domain or free-licensed. If the logo is simple enough (e.g. just text and possibly simple geometric shapes; you don't say what country and the threshold of originality is different in each country), it would be ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain; if it is old enough it could also be in the public domain on that basis (again, different rules in different countries; for a logo, this basis is unlikely in most countries, unless we are talking about a logo where any copyrightable portion is a century or so old). Otherwise, the logo is copyrighted and we need a specific free license (e.g. {{CC-BY}}) granted by the owner of the copyright, which might be either the organization itself or (more common than you might guess) the designer of the logo; the latter would actually be the default in most countries unless the copyright has been explicitly transferred.
  3. NOTE that (both for Commons and for uploading directly to en-wiki) the company cannot give just permission for use in en-wiki. If the logo is copyrighted, then the only acceptable permission is a free license (e.g. {{CC-BY}}) allowing derivative works and commercial use. (Of course, they retain trademark rights, and any uploaded logo should be tagged with {{Trademarked}}. Trademark is a separate intellectual property right from copyright.)
  4. If en-wiki has an article about the organization, it is possible to upload a non-free logo directly to Wikipedia on a "fair use" basis. This does not involve Wikimedia Commons in any way (and Wikimedia Commons does not allow "fair use" uploads); it also does not require any permission from the organization, because "fair use" does not require permission. See en:Wikipedia:Logos.
  5. An email from them to you giving you permission is worth nothing. Anyone contributor could say they have permission for anything. If the relevant license is not already publicly offered, then the right way to communicate that permission is the process described at COM:VRT, where a representative of the organization sends an email to the team here that handles confidential correspondence; some back-and-forth may be required.
I hope that helps. I know it may be a little confusing; you asked a "simple" question about something that is actually very complicated. Jmabel ! talk 05:49, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unless the file is released under CC-BY-SA or less restrictive license, it's not ok to upload. At the bottom of the website is probably a copyright header, that will say the license terms. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 00:40, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Snagglegrolop and @Chuck: That painting should be ok, Norton Simon is committing copyfraud, all works of Aert van der Neer (Dutch, 1603-1677) should already be PD.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:47, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - The designer for the original artwork for the ICRO (Irish Cave Rescue Organisation) 2003 Logo as shown on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Cave_Rescue_Organisation#/media/File:Irish_Cave_Rescue_Organisation_logo.jpg is unknown as it was developed in the 1970s and has been through many iterations since. The File that I have uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons is a modified version of the original logo design which was approved by the ICRO comittee in 2020. I am the designer of the modified 2020 logo. The modified logo includes the folowing changes: A white Cross on a Red circular background (ICRO is not a red cross organisation) and removal of the . between the ICRO lettering on the logo. As an ICRO Warden and designer of the modified logo I have authorisation from the ICRO comittee to make these changes.

Please advise on which CC licence I should attribute to the logo file?

CC0 Haitian government?

edit

On the Haitian central government's website, the footer has been updated to CC0. Not sure when the change occurred. Should we update the communication.gouv.ht template? Bremps... 20:55, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Probably, yes. On the page Template talk:Communication.gouv.ht, a user mentioned that it is since 13 September. A problem could be about older contents that may not be on the website anymore. The template might need to mention the date of the change. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:05, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I need to upload a logo to use in the organization infobox of Wikipedia article Nexus Project. I'm finding the instructions regarding copyright issues quite overwhelming. Please could someone give me some easier to understand guidance. Many thanks! Misha Wolf (talk) 22:49, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Misha Wolf: If the logo is just the text thing with the two arrows in the "N", that is well below the threshold of originality in the U.S., and can be uploaded to Commons with {{PD-textlogo}}.
In the future, if you are asking similar questions, it is very helpful if you link to the relevant logo on line somewhere, and indicate what country you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 23:34, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Assistance needed for adding own image

edit

I need assistance for this item: File:Johan Van Barel 500x500.jpg

I get message: "This media file is missing essential source information or appears to have an invalid source listed. The author and source of the file must be given, so that others can verify the copyright status. Edit the file description page to add source information. Unless this issue is resolved, the file will be deleted seven days after this tag was added on 12 November 2024." But everything seems ok. I added source, author and license info, but above warning remains. What should I do to resolve this? Xpl0rr (talk) 00:03, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Xpl0rr. Generally the person who takes this photo is considered to be its copyright owner, and only this person can the release the photo under a copyright license that Commons accepts. Did you take this photo yourself back in 2012? If you did, then you're considered to be the copyright holder of it, but Commons needs some way of verifying that this is the case. Since there's no online source provided for the photo and there's no COM:EXIF data which can be checked to aid in this verification, your best bet might be to send a COM:CONSENT email to Wikimedia VRT so that your copyright ownership can be verified. If, on the other hand, you didn't take this photo yourself, then Commons can't really keep without being able to verify the consent of the person who did. In other words, that person will need to send a CONSENT email to Wikimedia VRT for verification purposes, or provide some other way for Commons to verify the they've agreed to release the file under the license you used. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:33, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Xpl0rr:
  • A warning tag placed on a page by a user remains on the page until a user removes it. If the file has a source, the tag can be removed.
  • The "no source" tag placed there by the user was perhaps not the most adequate tag to use in a case like this, since your file did have a source, claimed as "own work". What the user likely meant was that he had doubts about the statement of "own work". The user was somewhat lazy by using that tag and throwing all the work to be done on the shoulders of administrators instead of providing an actual rationale for his doubt and a link. More adequate tags for a case like this might have been the tag "copyvio" (meaning a possible copyright violation because the image was already on the internet as a non free image) or the tag "delete" (to initiate a discussion), with rationale and link.
  • In the case of this photograph, "own work" and "self-photographed" are rather equivalent, so replacing one by the other did not change the situation. If you took the original photo yourself, "own work" was fine and it is the usual way to mark it. "Self-photograped" is also technically correct, but it is usually used for cases of photographic reproductions of other works.
  • Anyway, since the image was already at several places on the internet, e.g. [3], and could have been copied, Wikimedia Commons requires special evidence to verify the statements.
  • Your statement of own work together with your Wikimedia user name, which closely resembles a user name associated with JVB on other websites, suggest that the photo might be a self-portrait. If that is the case, the confirmation can ideally come from an email address publicly associated with JVB. Please see the page Commons:VRT for how to provide confirmation by email.

Completely different images are minor improvements? Why?

edit

Please take a look at File:Cité du Grand Parc模型.jpg, the current version looks like a completely different color and it feels like the object being photographed seems to be far away from the author (compared to the original version). Also, File:紐西蘭國家住屋模型.jpg shows that the current version is an overwrite of the original version, but they are two images of the same object at different angles. However, admin thinks that the author overwriting one's own files with minor improvements is OK. Completely different images are minor improvements? Why? Can anyone take a look?--125.230.72.61 125.230.72.61 07:51, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Which "admin thinks that the author overwriting one's own files with minor improvements is OK"? If there has been prior discussion, please link to it.
Had the uploader requested courtesy deletion of the original versions, this would have been granted, and then they would have been free to upload the new versions. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:29, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
