English: Five bronze seals of the Western Xia state, each inscribed with the two character word "commander" in Tangut seal script. Western Xia (1038-1227). One the seals was unearthed at Tongxin, Ningxia, in 1984, and has an inscription dating it to 1175 (Qianyou 6) on the back. This type of seal, of which over a hundred examples are known, comprise two seal script Tangut characters (reading top-to-bottom): "𗥦𗖅" (L2750 ɣu "head", L1516 sjwi "to lead" [Li Fanwen, Xia-Han Zidian 2008]), translated as "Commander" (Chinese shouling 首領). The five seals are probably B52-001 (back left), B52-004 (back middle), B32-001 (back right), B52-002 (front left), and B52-003 (front right). |
